Reaffirming the commitment for Recognition, Justice and Development

This Forum was carried out under the leadership of President Carlos Alvarado Quesada and First Vice President Epsy Campbell Barr. It constituted an effort to reaffirm the commitment for the Recognition, Justice and Development of Afro-descendants

The Forum was sponsored by the Government of Costa Rica and supported by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Participants had the opportunity to examine the progress and challenges in the implementation of the International Decade for People of African Descent, as well as other international commitments that have been assumed in the framework of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development and the 2030 Agenda.

The ceremony held in Cahuita, Costa Rica was to visit the signs of the shipwreck of an expedition of Danish galleons that transported enslaved people from Africa to America and who arrived in these lands after being lost at sea in 1710. It also aimed to reconcile and recognize the past together so that we will not repeat these injustices in the future.
